Synopsis
Wei Shen had ruled Yanyun Pass for half his life, never imagining he'd ultimately fall to an arrow shot by the young woman at his side.
The day the imperial cavalry reached the mountains, she transformed into the Princess of Zhenbei Prince's Residence. Only then did he realize that all her past flattery and adoration had been sugar-coated bullets meant to lower his guard. What she wanted was all eighteen strongholds of Yanyun.
During the amnesty negotiations, he sat high on his Red Hare horse, eyes narrowed, idly stroking his whip as if lost in thought.
The imperial court's offer was generous. The envoy recited it all in one breath, then asked in a trembling voice, "What do you think?"
He slowly raised a hand and pointed at the girl in the crowd. "Add one more condition. The eighteen strongholds of Yanyun as her dowry, and I want her too."
In Chai Feiyan's eyes, the story went like this:
A few days before their wedding, her fiance spent the night in the woods with another woman. He said, "It got dark, and we were trapped. It couldn't be helped. But don't worry, you'll always come first. She'll have to kneel and serve you tea, too."
She thought that sounded reasonable, so she went home, packed her things, and left the capital that very night, leaving behind just eight grand words:
We part in peace, each to our own horizon.
Chai Feiyan ate as she walked, never realizing she'd stumbled straight into the bandit stronghold that had plagued the imperial court for over a decade.
She was worried, but staying alive came first.
So she put all her cleverness (bootlicking), talent (flattery), and wisdom (sucking up) to use, learned every last detail about the bandit chief's holdings, and joined forces with the imperial court from within...
Just as she was marveling at life's unexpected adventures and happily waiting for the court's rewards, ready to climb to the top, the bandit chief laid down a new condition:
He wanted her.
She laughed. The imperial authority could not be mocked. Who was he to make demands?
But the official delivering the decree said, "The bandit chief is far too fierce. The higher-ups say we have to indulge this ancestor."
Chai Feiyan: ???
Then an imperial decree came crashing down on her, leaving her face stinging from the slap. From that day on, she had a husband.
