The Bride

This story is not contracted, and updates at a snail's pace.

Hua Xue rescues a man in white from deep in the forest. He is gravely wounded, his white clothes stained with mud and blood.

"There are wolves in the forest, but don't be afraid. Though wolves are cold-blooded animals, they can be warmhearted too. Stay in the wooden cabin. Once you've recovered, I'll take you out."

From then on, Zhao Chengying and Hua Xue live under the same roof for three months. He watches as a wave of her hand brings the wolves to her, and a sweep of her sleeve sends them away. She and the wolves seem like family.

Three months later, a grand procession arrives to take Zhao Chengying back. He changes into a dark robe and becomes a different person, using the methods Hua Xue taught him to lead the wolves in an attack on Liaoxia.

When news arrives that the dynasty's Fifth Prince has won a great victory and reclaimed lost territory, the city is filled with spring colors and willows line the palace walls. Only Hua Xue remains, weeping over the wolves' corpses.

When Zhao Chengying comes to fetch her in white, he says, "Hua Xue, I've finally been made Crown Prince. I want to marry you."

Hua Xue looks at him, her eyes reddening. The things she loves most in her life are the wolves who protected her as she grew up, and the man surnamed Zhao standing before her.

She thinks back to the first time she saw him: a gentleman as pure as jade.

[Content warnings] Set in an alternate Song Dynasty, so far removed from history that it's practically fictional. Don't scrutinize the historical details. The male lead is not a scumbag, not a scumbag, not a scumbag. He has a storyline about his origins. The heroine wins him back after a painful separation. The ending is already planned, and it won't be angsty.
