If the Cold Mist Held Deep Affection

“When the springs dry up, the fish gather on land, breathing moisture on one another and sharing their spittle. Better to forget one another in the rivers and lakes.”, Zhuangzi, “The Great and Venerable Teacher” It seemed she was destined for an extraordinary life even before she was born. Xiao Hanyou, whose origins concealed a legendary mystery, could hardly afford the luxury of feelings, let alone love. Amid the many struggles within the palace, the future that would draw countless eyes was faintly foreshadowed. Liu Yan Miao, beautiful as a flower reflected in water and delicate as a willow in the breeze, was about to be surrounded by power and prestige. What kind of extraordinary life would this bring to her, secluded deep within the inner chambers? “I’ll trade my present life for your next one. I’ll trade my whole lifetime for your eternity.” Perhaps, in doing so, she would lose her life??? Perhaps, from tangled desires to a love grown faint and thin, she would eventually accept her fate willingly. All for that one glance, that lifetime. But would they eventually forget one another in the rivers and lakes? Why were the two of them suffering so much, and for whom? Or were they simply women born to love, just like everyone else?
