The Absent Suspect

What kind of woman is Jiang Shuangsu?

In her own words:

"My mother sold me. Am I not allowed to go looking for her?"

"Now that I'm married, does that mean I have to let others do whatever they want with me?"

"Just because someone has their eye on me, do I have to run away in disgrace?"

That's the kind of person she is.

In 1930, a strange rumor quietly spread through Shanghai.

Anyone who committed heinous crimes would be hunted down by a water ghost seeking their life.

Not one member of their family, young or old, would be spared.

So Sun Ran, the loan officer at HSBC, died along with his family of three.

Zhang Chao, a waiter at the Guangming Hotel, also died with his family of four.

Their deaths were bizarre. Each family sat neatly around the dining table and took their own lives to atone for their sins.

And today, Fu Zongan, a shareholder of HSBC and the head of its Chinese operations, took his own life around the table with his family as well.

It was at this moment that Li Yilan met this peculiar woman, a woman full of secrets.
