★Synopsis
In impoverished Qieke County, Li Haiyan's life seems filled with gray sand. A substitute kindergarten teacher earning just 1,500 yuan a month, she bears the full weight of caring for her disabled husband and two young children on her frail shoulders, struggling to breathe in life's mire. Then, one August, a breeze from a distant, prosperous world blows in: Jiang Wen, president of the Yufeng Group, arrives on a poverty-alleviation inspection and enters her quiet world.
At their first meeting, she is just a vague stranger in his eyes. But her eyes, so like those of his younger sister who vanished many years ago, become an obsession he can't look away from. Though he knows she isn't his sister, Jiang Wen can't help projecting his concern and guilt over his family onto her through quiet acts of care. And so, in one small, heartwarming moment after another, two parallel lines that should never have crossed begin to drift off course.
That faint connection, however, becomes the final straw that shatters her husband's pride. After a devastating misunderstanding, he chooses to take his own life. On that despairing night, Li Haiyan calls Jiang Wen and begs to borrow money, offering the last thing she has in exchange for a chance to save her husband. Trembling, she says, "I'll sleep with you." But he throws down the money and walks away without looking back. Like a benefactor who truly expects nothing in return, he leaves her hardship and humiliation laid bare before him.
Someone warns her that Jiang Wen's kindness is like the way people treat stray cats and dogs: a passing whim. She shouldn't lose herself in this illusory warmth. But she's long since grown used to relying on this lifeline. If she loses it, she'll fall back into the suffocating filth. Yet he is the sun hanging high in the sky, while she is a shadow beneath a bridge, hidden from the light. What right does she have to hold on to him?
