Wait, My Husband Isn't the Male Lead?

After dying from overwork, Lin Yao discovers she's become the original wife of the male lead in a novel set in the early years of the People's Republic. She's the sort of plot device who thinks the male lead is useless and his family is poor, then abandons her husband and daughter to run off with a rich man, spurring him to work hard and reach the top. Look down on him? Come on! He's the male lead of a feel-good novel! Lin Yao clutches the marriage certificate she and Fu Zhijing just received, nearly drooling with happiness. To hell with the 996 grind! She'll never have to work hard again! There's no money at home, and they can't afford meat? Lin Yao asks her husband to figure something out. The annoying neighbor is showing off a new dress and little leather shoes? Lin Yao complains to her husband. The supply and marketing cooperative has gotten a refrigerator, washing machine, and television? Of course Lin Yao goes to her husband again... With Fu Zhijing, the male lead, around, Lin Yao can lie flat in comfort and live the good life as a lazy fish. Her only problem is figuring out how to kick this beast out of bed at night. One day, after yet another failed attempt to send him packing, Lin Yao rubs her aching back in the courtyard, basking in the sun and cracking sunflower seeds as she listens to the new neighbor gossip. "You won't believe this! There's a man in our village with the same name as your husband. His family isn't well-off, and his wife couldn't take it, so she left him and their child to run off with a rich man! What a tragedy!" Lin Yao's eyes widen. Oh!
