Alluring Hues

[Big Bad Wolf x Little White Rabbit] When Pei Zhihuan was transferred back to the capital, he found a young woman in his home, delicate as could be, with cloudlike hair and a slender waist that seemed as if it might break at a touch. She was as timid as a rabbit, her lovely, alluring eyes always cast down when she looked at people. His father, a widower for many years who had passed sixty and never remarried, patted Pei Zhihuan on the shoulder and said with a smile, "This is your stepmother. Be sure to get along with her from now on." Pei Zhihuan glanced at his young stepmother. She was nearly twenty, nine years younger than him. His stepmother looked up tentatively at her stepson, who was a full generation older than her, and gave him a timid smile. Pei Zhihuan only turned his gaze away indifferently, saying nothing. * His father fell gravely ill. Before he died, he clasped Pei Zhihuan's hand tightly and urged him earnestly, "Sese is young. I can't bear to leave her a widow in the prime of her youth, so I've written her a divorce letter. But she has no family to rely on and will be all alone. You must protect her and find her a good match." "Rest easy, Father." Pei Zhihuan glanced at his young, beautiful stepmother and said coolly, "I will." [Signposts] 1.
