Mu Mianmian is the youngest daughter of Qingzhou's provincial governor. Doted on by everyone, she is sent far away to Yanjing by imperial decree.
Everyone says she has made a wonderful match. Her husband's family is distinguished, their residence is peaceful, and as soon as she marries in, she'll enjoy a lifetime of honor as the principal wife, with a first-rank title.
At first, Mu Mianmian thinks so, too.
But ten days after she marries Wei Changqing, her husband dons his armor and heads to the frontier. He pours his passion onto the battlefield, leaving her alone in an empty bedchamber.
On the first and fifteenth of every month, he sends her a letter. Mu Mianmian finds some comfort in them, her fair cheeks turning faintly pink. At least her husband hasn't forgotten her.
But when they meet again a year later...
Wei Changqing stares at the beautiful woman before him. After a long hesitation, he tentatively calls out, "Madam?" His uncertain tone makes it clear he isn't sure.
"You've got the wrong person!"
Furious, Mu Mianmian twists her handkerchief and turns to leave. Then she changes her mind halfway down the road, comes back, and stands before him again, glaring angrily. "You've forgotten even my name, haven't you?"
"..." Wei Changqing rubs his temple. "Mianmian."

Rumor has it throughout the streets and alleys of Yanjing that Duke of England Wei Changqing loves his wife more than life itself.
When Mu Mianmian hears this, she grits her teeth in anger. Only she knows just how much of a scoundrel this usually aloof and passionless man can be.
Later, she gets so mad that she bites Wei Changqing's hand.
That day, Wei Changqing takes leave and skips morning court, staying home to keep her company. He gently coaxes her, "Give me one more bite. Will that make you feel better?"
A marriage arranged by parents and matchmakers.
