The Silk Road

Li Jun, a border-commandery prince forgotten for more than a decade, receives an imperial edict ordering him to return to the capital. At last, he sets out on the road from the ancient city of Aman eastward to Yumen Pass, hoping to retire in peace. But even the best-laid plans go awry. Crossing the snowy plains, his army is bitten by a snake. His identity is stolen, he is left penniless, and he himself is saddled with lingering ailments.

Li Jun is baffled. How could there be bandits on a road in peacetime?

Only then does he learn that the dynasty's glory has faded. The Anxi Protectorate and its vassal states are ruled by illegitimate regimes, and devastation lies everywhere. The sovereign he once believed in is no longer wise and mighty. The institutions he once revered have fallen apart. Even the edict summoning him back to court is a complete fabrication.

The man who forged the false edict and bit him is named Bai Yumen.

The Bai family has nine sons, each named after a mountain pass. They are the uncrowned rulers of the cities and towns of the Western Regions. Bai Yumen is only twenty, but possesses extraordinary skills. He is the most bewitching snake in the Bai family's master's hands.

Li Jun has modest aims: to restore order and clear his name. So, swallowing his humiliation, he dances with desert snakes and white wolves, embarking on an immense journey that spans the Tianshan and Kunlun Mountains from north to south, and crosses Loulan and Kucha from east to west.
