Beyond Mount Wu

During the summer after the high school entrance exams, a girl named Xu Ling came to live at her house. She was younger and shorter than Lu Zhuo, and stood in the living room with a timid yet stubborn look in her eyes.

Lu Zhuo thought, This little sister is so pitiful.

So she spent the whole summer playing with her.

When high school began, Xu Ling returned to her own home. Rumors spread around class that she was the Xu family's illegitimate daughter, a filthy little rat from the sewers.

Because of Xu Ling's identity, Lu Zhuo only spoke to her after school, once everyone else had left. Later, when people found out they were friends, Lu Zhuo regretted it and cut off contact with her.

After the Lu family went bankrupt and Xu Ling took control, people dug up that history. Everyone laughed, saying it was a perfect example of someone who had been ignored yesterday but was now out of reach.

Xu Ling smiled faintly and said nothing.

That day, a thick fog hung outside. She gazed out the window, seeming to see the rainy day behind it.

On that damp, rainy day, she watched Tuxedo Mask kiss Sailor Moon. Her eyes grew moist, and she turned to say, "Xu Ling, do you know what it feels like to kiss someone?"

Later, at their graduation party, they played Truth or Dare. Someone asked whether she was still a first-kiss virgin.

She said she was.

That night, Xu Ling lowered her head and kissed her, asking why she'd said her first kiss was still intact. Her eyes gleamed mischievously, and she answered with complete justification, "You're not a boy."

Xu Ling's heart ached until it turned sour.

It hurt for many, many years.
