After the Yuanxing Rebellion, the once-prosperous Tang Dynasty split into three kingdoms: Southern Tang, Eastern Yan, and Man Cang. Of these, only Southern Tang inherited the bloodline of the Tang imperial clan, holding out in the south of the Yangtze.
Emperor Shunkang of Southern Tang died. To claim legitimacy over the realm, he publicly passed the throne to his adopted daughter, who was just entering her teens, but secretly left a will: once the girl gave birth to a boy, she was to be killed and the infant installed as emperor.
