The Boy Who Couldn't Smell

Qi Han has been unable to smell anything since childhood.

But he can see.

He cannot smell the sweet fragrance of pomelos, but he can see golden petals falling from their skins and drifting far away on the wind. He cannot smell the ink on fresh textbooks, but he can see the wisps of smoke rising from burning sandalwood. Likewise, he cannot smell the stench of the polluted river beside his hometown, but he can see thousands upon thousands of ugly black bats bursting through the water's surface and surging into the sky, a vast swarm like a dark cloud blotting out the sun.

His nose breathes just like anyone else's. He simply experiences smells in a different way. This is a secret he has never shared with anyone.
