A Woman's Confession

I used to wonder whether it might have been better for both of us if we'd never met. She might have found someone who loved her but had enough self-control to set boundaries and guide her down a brighter path. He wouldn't have been like me, loving her without limits and helplessly watching her destroy herself. And I might never have understood what love was, but I could still have lived a stable, peaceful life.

But when I tried to imagine it all, I realized that a life without her frightened me more than the chaotic reality I live in now. Someone who has once seen the light can never again endure a life spent with nothing but darkness for company. When a person blind for half a lifetime suddenly sees flowers in full bloom, sunlight and clouds shifting across a lake, and the solemn, eternal cycle of sunset and moonrise, how could they ever willingly return to an abyss of nothingness? Just thinking about it is enough to break your heart.
