On Jiang Jia's birthday, she took the blame for a coworker and got harshly scolded by her boss. Clutching the documents she had translated, she waited for the subway in a daze, crying all the while. She was crying so hard that she didn't even notice someone rummaging through her backpack. She only snapped out of it when a young man beside her was knocked to the ground. The boy clung to the wrist of a short, stocky man and shouted in an extremely strong accent, “He stole something! He stole your stuff!”
A subway train roared into the station. People around them hurried to get aboard. A skinny boy had stepped in to help, and a woman with a swollen, tear-streaked face yanked at her backpack zipper, then swung her stack of heavy documents down on the man, hitting him over the head. A mess of mistranslated pages flew everywhere as the short, stocky man turned and ran. The boy was still on the ground, trying to help Jiang Jia pick them up. She crouched down and looked at his flushed face. “Are you okay?”
The boy stood up, and Jiang Jia was surprised to find that he was all skin and bones, yet extremely tall. His worn-out, faded hoodie hung loosely on him. He pulled up the hood and started to stagger away. Jiang Jia grabbed him. “Wait! What's your name?” The boy tried to pull away, then collapsed back onto the ground. He had a fever. Jiang Jia let out a heavy sob and took his hand. “Come on. Let's go to the hospital.”
The boy stared at her in alarm. Jiang Jia cried as she spoke to him. “I just graduated this year and work as a translator at a business consulting firm. My boss yelled at me until I was nearly dead today, and I might get fired. It's my birthday too. Good people deserve good things to happen to them. Let's get you to a hospital.”
The boy was so bewildered by her tears that he followed along like a fool.
Jiang Jia asked him, “What's your name, really?”
The boy answered in his thick accent, “My name is Lei Hui.”
That was the first time Jiang Jia met Lei Hui. She had no idea then that this boy would one day transform, just as his name suggested, becoming famous far and wide and reigning supreme on stage. He would become an exceptionally outstanding man, and that man would confess his love for her. He had loved her for many years.
In the years that followed, Lei Hui repeatedly and unwaveringly proved one thing:
He loved her very much.
But she didn't believe him.
