The snow had just stopped, and I sat alone atop Shanglu Hill as Chongming birds skimmed low over my head. I counted forty-three of them. The snow had fallen for three days and three nights. The world was boundless and white, the Mirror Lake frozen for miles. In a daze, I remembered that today was his birthday. I burned the gods and Buddhas of the thirty-three heavens to ash, yet I could never bring him back. … Life and death, the beginning and ending of fate, it all comes down to this. … In the sixteenth year of the Ximing era, the High God Feng Yuan returned from his trial, having forgotten his past. Decades later, a little demon appeared in the human world: a Rakshasa bird. The High God sentenced it to the Sea of No Mercy to endure a hundred years of punishment. Main story told in third person Theme:
