Mei Wan's master signed her up for meditation at Liuhe Temple. She was deeply unwilling to go, until she met a handsome "sweeping monk" and found herself enjoying the food so much that she ate two extra bowls of vegetarian rice.
One rainy night, thunder woke her. By mistake, she stumbled into Jiang Yubai's room.
"I'm scared of thunder. Could you keep me company and talk to me?"
"All right."
The next morning, Mei Wan woke up in a single bed and discovered a gray monk's robe draped over her. The "sweeping monk" had left the temple without a trace.

When they met again, Mei Wan was standing beside a molten iron furnace. Her sleeveless top and coarse shorts did nothing to diminish her beauty.
Jiang Yubai had come especially to ask Mei Wan to impersonate his cousin, who had died in an accident. In return, he promised to do three things for her.
Mei Wan turned around, her eyes brimming with springtime warmth.
"You'll do anything?"
Jiang Yubai said, "Yes."
-
Jiang Yubai broke his promise on the third request.
Huangcheng.
Under the moonlight, he lit up the sky with a dazzling display of fireworks, begging Mei Wan to forgive him.
The clang of hammering rang through the entire night.
The next day, Jiang Yubai received a gift of love: a miniature iron dog cage.
Mei Wan held a hammer and smiled sweetly. "Take it. From now on, you're my dog... I mean, my man."
-
Three meetings and two partings. Mei Wan didn't know that whenever Jiang Yubai was with her, he never had enough time.
Not enough time to speak, to respond, or to smile.
To him, keeping his eyes on her wherever she went was what he wanted most.
