A Collection of Nightmares

This is where nightmares are collected.

Background:

After falling asleep, a person's sleep cycles continuously and regularly between two different sleep states, called non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM sleep) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep).

REM sleep is characterized by the following:

1. The skeletal muscles throughout the body are completely relaxed, and the limbs and torso cannot move. There are exceptions, such as the muscles of the digestive tract and the respiratory muscles, which remain active.

2. The cerebral cortex is active. If a person is awakened during this stage, they often clearly remember having just dreamed about a sequence of events.

3. During this stage of sleep, the sleeper's eyes move actively. Others can see them moving back and forth beneath the eyelids, which is why this stage is called "rapid eye movement sleep."

Because the skeletal muscles are completely relaxed, the content of dreams is not acted out.

For example, if someone dreams of skiing and accidentally falls, the movements they make in the dream to stop themselves from falling will not happen in reality.
