First Love

Xu Youning and Cheng Sui are worlds apart. Cheng Sui is a favored child of heaven, proud and untamed, always shining brightly, while Xu Youning is as insignificant as dust, never noticed by anyone.

They seem like two people with nothing in common, living in separate worlds with no connection.

Everyone at Beiguang High School envies, admires, and idolizes Cheng Sui. His family is wealthy, and though he seems never to study, he always ranks first in his grade. His proud, unyielding nature means no one dares to cross him. His brilliance eclipses countless others, drawing scores of girls after him, while Xu Youning quietly hides a secret in her heart.

It was an ordinary rainy night. After evening study, Xu Youning was locked in the classroom by her classmates as a prank, just like always.

The school was eerie in the silence of the early morning. She curled up in a corner, nearly falling asleep, when Cheng Sui smashed the window.

The boy wore his track jacket unzipped, his expression sharp and aloof, a hint of amusement in his eyes. He seemed utterly nonchalant, as though he had merely been passing by, not gone out of his way to rescue her.

Holding up his phone, he switched on the flashlight, its beam falling on her. He held out a hand, looking casual, with a hint of pity in his expression. “Hey, you again. Why don't you go tell a teacher?”

The boy's posture was languid, and there was a hint of amusement in his gaze. Xu Youning shook her head.

The rain was pouring, so Cheng Sui lent her an umbrella.

A week later, she summoned the courage to return it. She thought Cheng Sui might not remember her, but to the surprise of everyone in the classroom, the boy stood up and walked over to her. He lowered his head toward her and, with a teasing grin, said, “You took my jacket that day, too. Why didn't you return that?”

Word of this suddenly spread around school. Everyone said Cheng Sui had suddenly changed his taste, but Xu Youning was so insignificant that the rumor died out in less than a week. No one really thought there could be anything between her and Cheng Sui.

Compared with the girls Cheng Sui used to keep around him, Xu Youning was far too ordinary. Others treated the little incident as a joke, but Xu Youning nearly took it seriously. After that, though, she and Cheng Sui had no further contact, and everything went back to how it had been.

One day, Xu Youning went to the rooftop to deliver a letter for a friend. After reading it, the boy tore it up and casually tossed the pieces at her feet.

Xu Youning crouched down and patiently picked up the torn letter. As she was leaving the rooftop, Cheng Sui suddenly stepped out from the shadows in a corner.

His gaze was indifferent, but his expression was dark. He abruptly bent down to pick up the envelope from the ground, then looked at her with a faintly mocking smile and said with exaggerated concern, “Hey, you didn't get rejected by him, did you?”

Xu Youning shook her head in a panic. Before she could explain, Cheng Sui suddenly lowered his head toward her, his gaze full of insinuation, his voice enticing. “Xu Youning, do you want to give me a try?”
