After spending years at the Jia mansion, Lin Daiyu finally saw the Jia family for who they were and came to her senses: no one in the Jia family was a suitable husband for her!

While the Jia family secretly prepared a wedding for her, a man who seemed like a celestial being came to stay at the mansion. She kept running into him in different parts of the Grand View Garden.

"May I ask how old you are, Miss?"

"What kind of person asks a young lady her age?" Daiyu looked at the man before her. The cold wind had made her cheeks red, and now they flushed even more. Tilting her head, she whispered, "Sixteen."

Ji Yuanlan was staying at the Jia mansion for one reason only: to investigate the family. After all, he was a prince from outside the family who was supposedly "idle and good-for-nothing."

But this celestial-looking young lady and Baoyu, whose heart was set on the flowers, were certainly not a good match.

"Miss Lin! Hey, why are you here? Where's Miss Lin?"

"She just went to rest. Come back another day."

Inside the room, Lin Daiyu was practicing calligraphy. She coughed and told Zijuan to go see who was outside.

Zijuan stepped out and saw Ji Yuanlan. She looked around. "I think my lady heard the voice of Second Master Bao. Where is he?"

"He saw me here, so he went to look for Miss Bao."

Zijuan was stunned. "Then why aren't you going to spend time with the other young ladies, Mr. Ji?"

Ji Yuanlan blushed, looking a little embarrassed. "To be honest, I only want to spend time with your young lady."

Daiyu is reborn.

But why is she still at the Jia mansion?

Daiyu is careful in every way and cautious in all things. She avoids Jia Baoyu and steers clear of Xue Baochai.

She spends three years as the model granddaughter, but still can't earn a lifetime of peace and quiet at the Xiaoxiang Pavilion.

In the third year of Yong'an, Old Madam Jia arranges for Daiyu to marry Yangzhou's most troublemaking young man.

Daiyu thinks, then I'll return to Yangzhou. At least I'll have family property to keep me fed and clothed.

"Your family's possessions have long since been sold off. As for the Jia family, I'm all you have now." Li Chang'an looks at Daiyu. "Want them back? I'll help you."

Daiyu sits at the Fengling Ferry dock and looks up at Li Chang'an. "Really? You'll give me anything I want?"

"I will, as long as it's what you want."

"Then let me think about it. I'll tell you in a while."

Later, Li Chang'an rises to the highest ranks of the court, becomes a powerful minister, and enjoys boundless prestige. He becomes the great general everyone in the capital curries favor with.

The Jia mansion is confiscated, and Li Chang'an personally leads the men who do it.

Li Chang'an asks Daiyu, "See? I kept my word."

Later still, Li Chang'an offends the imperial family, is imprisoned, and is exiled to the frontier. He tries to divorce Daiyu.

Daiyu changes out of her finery, picks up her bundle, and follows him all the way. "I tore up the divorce papers. I only want you."
