Cochineal worms are the source of red pigment. They are raised on cacti like silkworms. The male worms are only used to pass on the family line, but the female worms have a child body phenomenon (they remain larvae throughout their lives and do not grow wings or become moths). It is these female worms that have red pigment in their bodies. The Mexicans grind the insect bodies into powder and boil them with leaves and lemons in boiling water. They add more insect powder and less powder, so the depth of the "carmine" is different.
