The males are used only for reproduction, but the females display paedogenesis: they remain larvae for their entire lives, never growing wings or turning into moths. It’s the females’ bodies that contain the red pigment. Mexicans grind the insects into powder, then boil it with leaves and lemon. The more or less insect powder they add determines how deep the shade of “cochineal red” will be.
