She gave him her whole heart and did her best to love him. Then she overheard him, drunk and talking with his friends in private, call her "a young girl who was far too easy to get into bed." She handed her ex-boyfriend a tissue, wiped away his tears, and apologized. Jiang Chengyan lit a cigarette and watched her from a distance. He heard the young man sob, "If you meet someone wonderful when you're young, does it always end with a broken heart?" With her back to him, her figure graceful, her skin fair and soft, she answered with a gentle, patient laugh: "Meeting someone awful when you're young can break your heart just as easily." She turned and saw Jiang Chengyan. Then she laughed and murmured, "Look, isn't that the bad guy himself?" = At twenty-eight, Qiu Wan was at the most alluring age in a woman's life. She was beautiful, wealthy, and had plenty of ex-boyfriends. Every one of them was still hung up on her, chasing after her to get back together. Among them, Jiang Chengyan was by no means the most outstanding. Later, after they had been together, Qiu Wan lit a cigarette and gave a quiet laugh with her back to Jiang Chengyan. She said, "You're ten years older than me. By that reckoning, I got the short end of the stick by quite a bit." Jiang Chengyan fought to keep his emotions in check and asked, "Then why are you willing to be with me?" Qiu Wan stubbed out her cigarette and glanced at him sideways, sounding sincere despite her teasing tone. "So sleeping together means we're together now?"
