He smiled at her, then composed himself, his expression solemn. In a clear, ringing voice, he said:
"I, Dai Mubai, swear here and now: Zhu Zhuqing is the only person I will ever love. I will gladly brave fire and water for her, and lay down my life without hesitation. I pray that my heart will never change, that our bond will never break, and that we will share every joy and hardship, in life and in death!"
She stepped forward as well and placed her slender hand atop the altar. Her eyes shone, her smile radiant. Sunlight streamed over her, gilding even her lowered lashes a pale gold. She spoke in a soft voice, her words as simple and clear as the sunlight:
"I hope the vows between us come true."
