The realm is in chaos, warlords carve up the land, and people die today only to be replaced tomorrow.
The greatest ruler of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the mighty Zhou emperor Shizong, Chai Rong.
He vowed to conquer the realm: ten years to unify the land, ten years to nurture the people, and ten years to bring peace.
He had almost achieved it. He campaigned in the south and the north, shattered idols of gods and Buddhas to provide for the people, and cut down foreign invaders with ease. He was the fiercest man of his age!
But just as his great ambition was within reach, he died young.
After his death, his subordinates stole his realm, leaving his widow and young children to suffer. Some died, while others barely scraped by...
Chai Rong was so furious he refused to be reborn!
But in life, he had loved his people as his own children and amassed a glittering store of merit. He shone so brightly in the underworld that he could blind the eyes of ghosts.
The underworld didn’t dare mishandle such a stubborn tenant with so much merit, so they could only ask him helplessly: “What do you still want?”
Chai Rong: “I only regret that my life was cut short.”
He hated the traitor Zhao so much that he wept blood. “Had I not died, you would have served as my subjects for all eternity!”
This man’s resentment was overwhelming, yet there was nothing they could do about it. The King of Hell worried himself bald, searching through the Book of Life and Death until he finally marked the name of a little ginseng spirit. She might once have had the chance to cultivate into an immortal, but she had just gained sentience and already managed to get herself killed.
The little ginseng spirit had quite a history. She had originally been the first immortal pill refined by the Supreme Elder Lord, but she accidentally jumped into the alchemy furnace and was melted by its true fire.
Taking pity on her innocent, newborn spirit, the Supreme Elder Lord turned her into a ginseng plant so she could cultivate anew.
Now the little ginseng spirit had gotten herself killed again, becoming another major headache for the underworld.
So the King of Hell simply sent this reckless, death-seeking, seemingly unreliable little ginseng spirit to be Chai Rong’s daughter.
Let these two stubborn tenants give each other a headache!
In the late summer of that year, Chai Rong’s wife gave birth to their fourth son, Chai Zongxun. Born alongside him was his twin sister, Chai Zongbao.
After his daughter was born, Chai Rong’s health improved day by day, and he was full of energy. He even insisted on holding a baby in his arms when he went into battle.
After little Zongbao was born, the sentence her father said to her most often was: “Daddy’s taking you to kill people.”
In her short life, she saw more corpses than people!
She also got a coachman named Zhao, who feared her father like a tiger and was utterly loyal.
