Excerpt One

"I am willing to return the Black Plume Tally to Your Majesty. I beg Your Majesty to grant my resignation." Shen Qing knelt in the Hall of Supreme Harmony before Emperor Ming, who was reviewing state affairs.

"And what if I refuse?" Emperor Ming's hand, which had been moving, suddenly paused. He set down his brush and looked at Shen Qing, kneeling respectfully before him.

Shen Qing did not answer directly. Instead, she asked, "Does the promise you made me on the day of my coming-of-age ceremony still stand?"

"You want to trade that promise for your resignation?"

"Your Majesty, I joined the army on the day of my coming-of-age ceremony. I'm twenty-two now. Seven years of campaigning have made me stop longing for an ordinary woman's life. Excerpt Two

"I used to be called Xu Duruo. I had a husband, too. His name was Lin Shuyan. We once had a home in a little fishing village, but now I can't seem to find my home, or him!"
