0. This is a typical gender-reversal matriarchy, with a biological basis.
1. Most of the story takes place in a community where nobody has died since the early days of the revolution (this is related to the science fiction plotline). The heroine is much, much, much older than the hero.
2. There is no traditional marriage system in this community.
3. Therefore, the heroine of this story (the same heroine as in the previous story, Fire Beneath the Hoe) has quite a few female and male lovers.
