According to an Italian legend:

Tiramisu first originated when a soldier was about to leave for battle. His frantic lover had no time to bake an elaborate cake, so she hurriedly mixed together eggs, cocoa powder, and sponge fingers to make a crude, quick dessert, then delivered it to the soldier, drenched in sweat.

The food she offered, beads of sweat on her brow and tears shining in her eyes, was simple, yet rich and fragrant, filled with deep affection.

One meaning of tiramisu is therefore “Remember me.”

But if you love someone, you want to follow them to the ends of the earth, not merely be remembered by them. So tiramisu also means “Take me with you.”

There is another little-known legend about tiramisu.

They say it is a dessert of love, and that anyone who tastes it will hear the call of the god of love.
