This story tells what happened before Zhuge Liang first emerged from obscurity.
Many previous authors have focused on Liu Bei's three visits to Zhuge Liang's thatched cottage and the period after Zhuge Liang entered service. Little attention has been paid to the years Zhuge Liang spent traveling with his uncle, Zhuge Xuan, to Xuzhou, Yuzhang (Nanchang), and Xiangyang, or to the decade he devoted himself to farming in Longzhong.
This story centers on the Longzhong region and explores Zhuge Liang's interactions with Liu Biao and his friend Xu Shu, before further developing the emotional bond between Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei, the Left General.
A ruler and his ministers, as inseparable as fish and water, never forsaking one another. Through half a lifetime of turmoil, only the debt of gratitude to his lord remains to be repaid.
