A Long Song of Canglan

A little introduction to the strife among the nine kingdoms.

The world is in turmoil, and Canglan's disciples step forth.

The whole world holds Canglan in the highest esteem, but Qin Changge would rather not be associated with that reputation.

After all

The eldest senior brother once wept bitterly because he got drunk; the second senior sister blew herself up while making pills and ended up with hair like a hedgehog.

The third senior brother begs for osmanthus cakes. The fourth senior brother is afraid of water and dogs.

The fifth senior brother once disguised himself as a woman to steal someone's teachings, and the sixth senior brother has had one suitor after another crash and burn, among many other things.

The Canglan disciples would never broadcast their embarrassing stories to the world.

With long-suffering expressions, their masters admonished these disciples who had supposedly surpassed their teachers: "Keep your embarrassing secrets to yourselves. When you're out there, at least put on the air of an immortal sage from beyond the world! ...No, no, behave yourselves. When you go down the mountain to gain experience, just tell fortunes like we did back in the day, all right? Don't go causing trouble in every kingdom!"

So Qin Changge decided to stay on the mountain and avoid embarrassing herself in public.

Seeing his youngest disciple so unambitious, Xuanxu Zi was at a loss. Stroking his beard, he said with an inscrutable air, "Changge, to transcend the world, you must first enter it. All your senior brothers and sisters have gone down the mountain to gain experience. We can't leave you here doing nothing every day."

And with that, he kicked her down the mountain.

Qin Changge: "..." Hey, if you think she's freeloading and bullying people on the mountain, fine, but don't give such a high-minded excuse.

All she could do was pack her bags and go mooch food and lodging from her senior brothers and sisters.

This is really a story about a bunch of Canglan disciples who wreak havoc everywhere and get taught how to behave. (Being cheeky is so much fun.)

One wave of turmoil after another sweeps through the kingdoms, while one layer of martial-world feuds follows another. Amid yellow sands and dry bones, grudges and vengeance, with white horses whinnying in the west wind, everyone thinks the martial world is nothing more than this.

Only in the end do they discover, Far away, snow falls on a lane in Jiangnan. In those days, there were spirited young men in fine clothes riding fine horses, bright-eyed girls whose laughter rang like bells, and two or three dear friends by their side, roaming the world with unrestrained abandon. And all of it... has become a past that cannot be revisited, preserved only in memory.

The first murder of the year takes place in Haicheng at the end of the year. The second follows three months later, and the third two months after that.

The victims are different, the methods vary, and there are no leads or apparent connections. The police are at a loss, and the whole city of Haicheng is on edge.

Gu Wei has poured years of savings into a sea-view home and was just getting ready to retire in comfort. She never expected to be forced back into the lead.

Gu Wei roars, "My long retirement vacation! You damn well better give me my retirement vacation back!" She sharpens her blade, ready for action.

Yifu smiles. "This officer is quite a handful." She too sharpens her blade, ready for action.

Those who see through the darkness may find themselves in it as well.
