After finishing "Last Small World," I felt so bad for Fushimi that I had to write a story to pamper him. Once I started writing, I realized that it's really hard not to put someone as sensitive and emotionally perceptive as Fushimi through the wringer. Even if I make him the one in control, he still ends up suffering...
Defensive pessimism can be explained with a line from "Ashes of Time": "I know the best way to avoid being rejected is to reject others first."
If someone doesn't want to fail, the best thing they can do is not try at all.
That's defensive pessimism.
And when you're dealing with someone who thinks defensively, if you take a step forward, they'll take a step forward, too. But the moment you stop, they'll retreat ten steps.
This might not quite fit the story, but I think it describes Fushimi really well, so I'll leave it here for now.
Does that movie where the hero changes his watch mean that he actually has a change of heart?
Very happy to find the update~
