Meng Lanting, granddaughter of a distinguished minister from the previous dynasty, falls on hard times and heads south to join her fiancé. Along the way, she happens to meet Feng Kezhi. Feng Kezhi is the ninth child in his family. The eight before him are all older sisters. After he was born, a fortune-teller said that with his broad forehead and well-defined philtrum, he had the kind of auspicious looks that drew good fortune without even seeking it.
