01
Yun Yin was a deity born of Heaven and Earth. After the gods gradually began to fall, he lived alone in Yunmeng Marsh for years, rarely concerning himself with worldly affairs.
Qi Yuan was the newly appointed Celestial Venerable of Wuwang Heaven, and came to Yunmeng Marsh to pay his respects to the High God.
Qi Yuan visited often. Though young, his innate spiritual constitution gave him profound cultivation, and with his sweet words and handsome face, it did not take long for him to realize that the aloof High God Yun Yin was not actually aloof at all. He was simply a true introvert. So Qi Yuan came to Yunmeng Marsh more and more often.
He took Yun Yin, who never liked to leave home, on trips through mountains and rivers and into the mortal world, letting him experience the ordinary joys of human life. Yun Yin's mortal heart stirred like a sudden storm, and every word and deed of Qi Yuan's could move his heart.
Yun Yin was so deeply immersed in love that he could not free himself, until a bloodied immortal messenger's desperate plea shattered the dream. It turned out that Qi Yuan was not at all the trusted Celestial Venerable of Wuwang Heaven. He was a devil created by the very hands of Wuwang Heaven's self-righteous immortals.
02
Qi Yuan was born with an innate spiritual constitution, in a peaceful village in the mortal world.
When he was five, two immortals arrived. They said he had exceptional aptitude for cultivation and wanted to take him to the heavens to cultivate.
Qi Yuan's parents could hardly bear to part with him, but feared they would ruin their son's future if they held him back. With heavy hearts, they let him go, never imagining that it was all a lie.
In the eyes of the immortals, those born with an innate spiritual constitution were nothing but natural furnaces, beings with more abundant spiritual energy than anyone except the gods.
The difference between Qi Yuan and a god was that gods were lofty and infinitely revered, while his blood, flesh, bone marrow, hair, and skin could all be used to make medicine and pills. He was nothing but food for those so-called immortals.
03
No one could have imagined that one day, the lowly human medicine Qi Yuan, hidden away from sight, would drain the Celestial Venerable of Wuwang Heaven and all ten of its elders. Every immortal who had taken pills made from his blood, flesh, and bone marrow had now become nourishment for Qi Yuan.
He slaughtered his way through Wuwang Heaven, climbed over the corpses of countless immortals, and ascended to the throne of its Celestial Venerable.
Afterward, Qi Yuan went to Yunmeng Marsh to seek out the god who might once have been able to save him from his suffering, but had naively pushed him back into hell instead: Yun Yin.
04
Three hundred years ago, Yun Yin had attended a banquet at Wuwang Heaven by invitation. While avoiding conversation and seeking a quiet spot, he came upon a frightened child.
The child wrapped his arms around Yun Yin's waist and begged him for help, but spoke so incoherently that he could not even explain who he was or where he was. With no other choice, Yun Yin took him back to his residence to settle him in, planning to ask the immortals of Wuwang Heaven about him afterward.
The immortals told him that ordinary people sometimes accidentally wandered into sacred places belonging to immortals, and that the child was one such case. They would make sure to send him safely back to the mortal world, so Yun Yin need not worry.
Yun Yin believed them. When he returned to his residence, the child had disappeared.
This old incident left little impression on Yun Yin, but it was enough for Qi Yuan to remember him for all eternity.
05
Qi Yuan brought Yun Yin back to Wuwang Heaven and announced to all creation that he would marry him.
It was utterly outrageous, an open challenge to the gods.
Yun Yin thought that if he knew nothing of the truth, he might have been overjoyed. But now, all he could see in Wuwang Heaven was an endless sea of blood.
The foolish immortals of Wuwang Heaven had misunderstood the power of an innate spiritual constitution. They thought it made someone a furnace, not realizing that people with such a constitution could not cultivate on their own and could only rely on devouring others.
Whatever spiritual beings they first devoured would become their food from then on. By a cruel twist of fate, Qi Yuan had drained the blood and flesh of immortals, so from then on, he could only feed on the flesh of immortals.
Do not urge others to be kind when you have never suffered as they have, especially when you are one of their perpetrators. Yun Yin had no right to ask Qi Yuan to let go of his hatred, but neither could he stand by and watch Qi Yuan continue his endless slaughter.
06
As a god, Yun Yin had the power to kill Qi Yuan.
Even Qi Yuan believed that.
But Yun Yin could not bring himself to do it.
The formation he had opened with every last ounce of his strength was not a killing formation, but something far more dangerous: a formation that reversed time and space.
Yun Yin returned to the day when the two immortals were going to take Qi Yuan away to cultivate.
At that moment, Qi Yuan was an innocent little boy, barely reaching Yun Yin's leg. His parents had raised him plump and rosy, round and sturdy, and utterly adorable.
The mountain village was still there, not yet destroyed by Wuwang Heaven.
Yun Yin breathed a sigh of relief.
Before Qi Yuan could leave with the immortals, he pulled out some candied fruit to coax the child.
