Lord of the Undead

Important: This is a forthcoming novel, scheduled to start in the winter of 2028.

A blurry figure stood on the altar, slender and twisted like smoke drifting in the wind, swaying faintly in the firelight.

[Holy Avid...] A person kneeling below the steps trembled with joy. The shadow on the altar silently read the clumsy runes carved into his forehead: [...fruit of sin... May I cleave my flesh and offer my soul, renounce every human virtue, and beg for calamity to descend...]

The human crawled toward Them, kissed Their toes, opened his withered lips, and wheezed out a cry with what remained of his tongue. The shadow bent down and placed an illusory finger on his greasy head.

The human stared wide-eyed with excitement, then curled into a ball in midair, bewildered. In just a few seconds, he went from a living person to a shriveled black fruit. The shadow carefully threaded a string through it and hung it at Their waist.

“Understood,” They said. “You spelled the name wrong, but... thank you for bringing me here.”

“I'm so hungry.”
