Yin Cai and Meng Xizhou had known each other for eight years and been in love for five, but in the end, they couldn't withstand a single tear from Ye Chuchu.
Ye Chuchu, frail with illness, fell to her knees before Yin Cai. "Yin Nian, please, give Meng Xizhou to me. I can't live without him."
Meng Xizhou said, "Yin Cai, I know you're strong and independent. You can live without me, but Chuchu can't."
Yin Cai felt so sick she could have swallowed two half-dead flies, and wished the pair would go to hell and love each other there.
But she couldn't. Murder was illegal, so she had to hold back.
Her best friend gave her a tip: the best way to recover from a terrible past relationship is to find a new boyfriend who's a hundred times better than your ex! Make the scumbag and his shameless mistress die of jealousy!
Yin Cai thought it was a good plan, though perhaps a little hard to put into practice.
She looked around, thought back over her past, and mentally sifted through every eligible man she knew or might know. Then she discovered, to her dismay, that her standards were to blame. She'd picked the best-looking man in her orbit early on, only for him to turn out to be trash. Finding someone even better than the best-looking scumbag was, frankly, harder than reaching the heavens.
That plan was a dead end, and the shameless pair kept showing off every day. Yin Cai was at her wit's end, so her best friend offered a second tip:
A fly's real weapon isn't its sharp teeth, but how disgusting it is as it buzzes around you. Stay away from flies, and you'll be immune to all their attacks.
Yin Cai wholeheartedly agreed.
So she took a long leave, packed light, and went to her best friend's hometown, a place called Xishan, where they said the mountain god's temple was especially efficacious, to clear her head.
She'd only meant to let the scenery wash away her gloom, but then...
Inside the mountain god's temple, the villagers prayed devoutly, as if nothing else existed before them.
But Yin Cai clearly saw a young man in black ceremonial robes sitting cross-legged on the offering table, his sleeves fluttering. He propped his chin in his hand, met her gaze, and suddenly lit up with boundless radiance.
"I've... been... waiting... for you."
He mouthed the words silently.
