Unlawful Cohabitation

He probably wasn't interested in her. If they hadn't rented a place together, they would never have crossed paths. If a male classmate had asked to share the rent with him back then, she was sure he wouldn't have refused.

He was sensible and practical, highly educated, with a good job, a good income, and a bright future. Perhaps he was a little too career-minded. They had lived together for two years, and he had never once crossed the line. He never interfered in her private life, just as she never paid any mind to his habits.

She'd often heard people say that when men and women live together, there's always some romantic tension. Yet she couldn't understand why there wasn't even the slightest hint of anything between them. Was it because he had a girlfriend? Because he was such an upright person? Or because she had no feminine charm and couldn't stir any man's interest??? (Despairingly, she thought: Maybe it was mostly the last one.)

Or maybe he simply hated her?
