Your Face Once Graced My World

Clouds and Water Far Away: I watched this film from last year only now. Does that mean I'm too late? Chen Qiushui and Li Biyun, their regrets, my sadness, have stayed with me for such a long time. I've always liked tragedies, but I never dared to write one. I always felt my writing wasn't good enough, and that any tragedy I wrote would feel awkward and wrong. Clouds and Water Far Away made me want to write a tragedy, not because of my writing, but because of how I feel right now. Maybe my writing is still immature. Maybe it won't make you cry. But as long as I cry, that's enough. Truly enough. Truly.

I want to write a story about a great hero and an ordinary young woman. The hero is a true hero; he could be Guo Jing or Yang Guo. But the young woman is no Huang Rong, nor is she Xiaolongnü. She's just an ordinary young woman, and so the story is destined to be a tragedy. Just as A Zhu was originally only a maid, yet the venerable Jin Yong gave her the added identity of a princess of Dali simply because she fell in love with Qiao Feng, a great hero. You wouldn't accept Qiao Feng falling in love with a mere maid; it would ruin your dream of a hero and his beauty. People say, “A hero's origins don't matter.” True, but in the eyes of society, women are never counted among the heroes. How tragic!

This may be a rather dull story, a rather sad one, an unpopular one, but I still have to write it. No particular reason.
