[Qing] The Story of Imperial Noble Consort Ling

Empress Xiaoyi Chun (1727–1775), of the Weijia clan (originally surnamed Wei, she was a member of the Plain Yellow Banner of the Han Chinese Eight Banners. She was later transferred to the Bordered Yellow Banner of the Manchu Eight Banners and her surname was changed to Weijia), was a consort of the Qianlong Emperor and the birth mother of the Jiaqing Emperor. She entered the palace in the fourth year of Qianlong’s reign. In the tenth year, she was first given the title Noble Lady Ling; later that year, she was promoted to Concubine Ling. In the thirteenth year of Qianlong’s reign, she was promoted to Consort Ling; in the twenty-fourth year, she was promoted to Noble Consort Ling; and in the twenty-fifth year, she gave birth to the emperor’s fifteenth son, Yongyan. In the thirtieth year, she was promoted to Imperial Noble Consort Ling and took charge of the Six Palaces. She died on the twenty-ninth day of the first month in the fortieth year of Qianlong’s reign, at the age of forty-nine. (The above information is from Baidu Baike.) This story is mainly about how Wei Ruolan became a favored consort, gave birth to a child, and eventually died. The ending for the historical Wei differs greatly from the one in this story.
