Wu Xie, a native of Hangzhou, is the only heir of the Wu family, one of the Nine Gates. In the underworld, people call him "Third Master Wu." He's from a thoroughly respectable family. Since childhood, his dream has been to make the Wu family flourish again under his watch. Of course, if you think that's too ambitious, he'd probably put it another way: it would be wonderful if he could marry a gentle, virtuous wife and have a few kids to inherit the Wu family's craft.
Oh, I forgot to mention: Wu Xie is a professional ghost hunter, otherwise known as a "charlatan."
But being a charlatan... er, a Maoshan Taoist, is a dangerous profession. Even though he doesn't generally do anything bad, getting involved with those things can still damage one's karma, and not everyone in the business gets a happy ending. For now, Third Master Wu's life goals are limited to catching little ghosts and maybe falling in love. He hasn't really thought about anything else.
Who knew he couldn't even achieve such modest goals? Ever since he met that little ghost, his life's path had gone crooked, twisting and turning every which way.
Haunted houses and evil ghosts have become everyday fare! When necessary, he even has to follow a walkthrough, clear out the minor enemies, fight the boss, and rescue the prince carried off by the evil dragon! But will someone tell him why this "prince" is still just a little kid who hasn't grown up yet? Fine, so he's still a child, but why does that mean Wu Xie has to turn into a nanny and wait on him hand and foot?
He's a charlatan, no, he's a genuine Maoshan Taoist, okay! Wasn't he supposed to catch ghosts, earn money, and get married? How did he end up washing this little ghost's clothes, cooking for him, and washing his diapers? Will someone tell him why all the treasures passed down in his family stop working as soon as they come into contact with this little ghost, who hasn't grown up and isn't good for much? Those are his livelihood! Someone, do justice and take this little ghost away!
