Painting the Sea

An artsy, melodramatic introduction from a third party's point of view:

What kind of other half would a teacher like this have?

Would it be someone like the sky? They seem so far apart, yet they hold each other close in the distance, where the sea meets the sky.

The concise version: Aren't they all just the usual old-married-couple things? There's not much of a plot, just memories and the present.
