The pristine, aloof Fox Venerable, and a gluttonous, flirtatious, adorable Peach Blossom Spirit
Mu Yubai, Fox Venerable of the Three Realms, is usually cold and solitary. The only thing he ever yearns for is a peach tree in the back hills of the Spirit-Suppressing Manor.
He keeps watch beneath the tree day after day, waiting for years. The peach spirit inside the fruit is anxious, afraid he will eat it like an ordinary peach.
Mu Yubai gazes at the peach and smiles gently. "Don't worry. I'll let you grow for a few more years."
The immortal peach takes human form as Tao Awu, a naive young woman in pink.
The usually indifferent Fox Venerable patiently teaches her cultivation. When Awu gets into trouble with her mischief, she hurriedly runs away, and he follows at an easy pace, calling after her again and again. The attendants in the manor privately laugh that when their lord calls to her, it sounds just like a fox's cry.
One day, he asks what she longs for.
The young woman counts on her fingers: roast rabbit, roast chicken, sweet cakes, candied hawthorn. All the delicious foods of the mortal world.
The Fox Venerable can't help laughing and crying at once.
Awu looks up, her peach-blossom eyes sparkling. "And you, my lord."
Mu Yubai strokes the top of her head. "My name is Mu Yubai. Why not call me Mubai?"
Awu's cheeks turn red. She pouts, "That's not fair, my lord."
The Fox Venerable smiles, warmth flowing through his eyes. "How am I being unfair? You are the radiant peach blossom on my heart."
