The Flaw Detective
Synopsis
On the day rookie civil servant Takahashi Noki passes the exam and joins the National Police Agency, he thinks he'll be assigned to the records division, spending his days with stamps and files. Instead, fate tosses him into the Special Cases Investigation Division, a marginal department dedicated to handling "imperfect crimes," staffed by five detectives with very different personalities.
His partner is Sendo Togo, the most eccentric detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He can't remember anyone's face. He has prosopagnosia and can identify people only by their voices, gait, scent, and tiny behavioral quirks. His way of solving cases is baffling: he blindfolds himself at the crime scene, touches every inch of the walls and objects, then suddenly says, "The killer tied the left shoelace wrong," and closes the case.
They face a string of "incomplete" crimes:
The door to a locked room is bolted from the inside, but the victim was right-handed and the wound is on the left.
Beside a corpse in a copycat murder lies a copy of Kafka on the Shore opened to page 43, but the book is upside down.
A kidnapper demands ransom but gets the victim's name wrong, writing the name of the victim's dead mother.
Each case is like a jigsaw puzzle missing several key pieces. But Takahashi Noki gradually realizes that these "imperfect" crimes aren't the killers' mistakes. They're deliberate signatures. Someone is creating flaws in the shadows of this city, then waiting for someone to fill in the blanks.
Sendo Togo never explains his deductions. Until one day, late at night in the office, he says to Noki, "Do you know why these crimes are all imperfect?"
"Why?"
"Perfection is God's business." He tilted his head. "Humans can only leave flaws behind. And my job is to find the first flaw the killer left."
Only then does Takahashi Noki realize that he hasn't stepped into an archive for "imperfect crimes," but into an unfinished Flaw Detective, a story written in flaws by a madman.
