Xu Zhao has an ability that makes him perfectly suited for odd jobs: he can switch bodies with someone else for up to twelve hours.
When someone gets trapped in an elevator, he goes in to rescue them.
When someone is too frightened by their injuries to move, he goes in and figures out what to do.
After two years on the job, he has only one requirement for his clients:
"When you're using my body, don't go running around. My left foot has an old injury."
Then, during one rescue, a survivor wearing his face stood in the safe zone and demanded that the rescue team leave him in the elevator.
Xu Zhao tried to end the exchange, only to discover he couldn't switch back.
Only then did the other person admit:
"The body in the elevator... wasn't mine either."

In this city, there's a service called "covering a shift."
People hire someone to take their night shift, attend a family dinner, or get through twelve hours they don't want to face themselves.
Later, some people refused to give their bodies back.
Some wanted to return them, but couldn't find the original owners.
And some woke up to find that the pay they'd received wasn't nearly enough to cover the new injuries they'd sustained.
Xu Zhao and Yun Huai's job is to bring these people back.
Yun Huai can temporarily fix three inanimate objects in place, making him an expert at securing dangerous scenes. But he can't stop his partner from constantly saying, "I can keep going."
Then, on a day off, the two willingly swapped bodies.
Only then did Yun Huai learn that every step Xu Zhao took made his left foot ache.
And Xu Zhao finally discovered that the person waiting for him at the exit every time would have shaking hands for a long while after supporting a heavy load.

There's one assignment on Xu Zhao's old contract that has never been closed.
The person Yun Huai has been searching for over the past three years happens to be on that same list.
