Synopsis
Amid the drifting clouds and mist atop Mount Shu, the first time the young Chen Suiyun saw her, she was being besieged by senior members of her sect. Her white clothes were stained with blood, yet she still held her chin high, defiance shining in her eyes. A green-scaled serpent's tail flickered behind her, and she stood proud as a winter plum atop a snowy peak.
"Demon! Surrender at once!" His uncle's sword was already thrusting toward her.
Chen Suiyun stood in front of her. He had no sword in his hand, yet for the first time, a crack appeared in his belief in the distinction between good and evil.
Liu Ruyan, a thousand-year-old snake demon, had never imagined she would fall in love with a Taoist from Mount Shu. She remembered her first life, when he was a gentle scholar in a small Jiangnan town and she disguised herself as an ordinary woman. They came to know one another and stayed together, until her identity as a snake demon was exposed. With trembling hands, he poured realgar wine at her feet, his eyes filled with fear and betrayal.
In her second life, he was a wandering swordsman. She deliberately kept her distance, yet they still met at a demon-extermination gathering. When his sword pierced her chest, she saw a fleeting pain in his eyes, but in the end, he did not recognize her.
In her third life, he was the leader of the Mount Shu sect, and she was a demon imprisoned beneath the Demon-Suppressing Tower. When he personally opened the tower's gate and saw that familiar yet foreign face, memories of their past lives surged back like a tide. At last, he understood: he had betrayed her in every lifetime.
"This time, let me protect you." Chen Suiyun handed the Demon-Slaying Sword to Liu Ruyan, hilt first, its point aimed at his own heart. "If the will of Heaven demands your death, then I will die with you."
Liu Ruyan transformed into a serpent, her green scales like armor. Her long tail stirred up wind and rain across the sky, yet she curled gently around him. She lowered her head, her cold, slit-pupiled eyes reflecting his resolute face. "Fool. When a demon falls in love, there is no escape from endless calamity. As the leader of Mount Shu, would you truly make an enemy of the world for me?"
He smiled and reached out to touch her icy cheek. "The world or you? I choose you."
At that moment, Mount Shu's thousand-year-old snow began to melt, and a beam of blue and white light shot into the sky. On the Three-Lifetime Stone, the red threads that had been entwined finally broke free from fate's shackles and bloomed into a lotus with two flowers on a single stem.
This is a story of fate and defiance, sacrifice and protection. When the divide between humans and demons seems impossible to cross, when the conflict between good and evil appears insurmountable, only love can help two lonely souls find each other through reincarnation, even if the heavens collapse, even if they face endless calamity.
