Qi Heng and Shen Yanshu shared a bed from childhood, their bond as childhood friends deepening over fifteen years. One was the decisive Crown Prince of the realm; the other, the Tutor’s peerlessly handsome legitimate son.
When Qi Heng ascended the throne, the imperial court became a battlefield of power. Ignoring the opposition of the whole realm, Qi Heng wielded an iron fist, laid out a red wedding aisle, and forcibly locked Shen Yanshu into the phoenix seat, taking him as his male empress.
On their wedding night, Shen Yanshu nearly plunged a dagger into his heart. The next day, Qi Heng appeared at court with a bright red handprint on his face.
The ministers trembled with fear. They all said the empress hated His Majesty to the bone, and that from now on, the two of them would fight until one of them died!
After they married, Shen Yanshu believed he hated Qi Heng with every fiber of his being. But the habits formed from growing up together were impossible to change.
The refined and aloof Young Master Shen, who behaved with such elegance before others, was “not normal” only around Qi Heng. Whenever Qi Heng raised a hand, he would instinctively lean into his arm. Whenever Qi Heng bent down, he would instinctively hook an arm around his neck and climb onto his back.
Now that Qi Heng was “humiliating” him like this, he decided to get rid, bit by bit, of the bad habits that man had taught him.
Shen Yanshu coldly tossed away the pastries Qi Heng insisted on feeding him by hand while reviewing memorials. He ate even the foods he disliked without changing his expression. At night, he would rather add two extra quilts himself than let anyone pull him into their arms.
The old eunuch who attended him was filled with anxiety. Yet he saw Shen Yanshu quietly point out the flaws when the ministers set a trap for Qi Heng; press his lips together and finish reviewing the memorials when Qi Heng fell asleep at his desk from exhaustion; and, whenever Qi Heng’s old illness flared up, coldly order someone to bring him medicine, while claiming the Imperial Medical Bureau had acted on its own.
The old eunuch cried out that he could not understand it.
Until one day, as Shen Yanshu was dining before a table laden with delicacies, a wave of nausea suddenly rose in his throat. He turned his head and retched.
Qi Heng’s expression changed at once, and he immediately summoned the imperial physician. The elderly physician trembled as he took Shen Yanshu’s pulse, then fell to his knees with a thud. Stammering, he said, “C-Congratulations, Your Majesty. The Empress... is with child.”
Qi Heng stood frozen, unable to react for a long moment.
After Shen Yanshu became pregnant, his temper rose steadily. In the past, he would only give people the cold shoulder. Now, the slightest thing going wrong was enough to set him off, and smashing cups and bowls was the least of it. Yet he was extraordinarily beautiful, and even when angry, his features held a breathtakingly alluring color.
By day, a pillow drove Qi Heng out of the bedchamber, veins throbbing at his temples as he gritted his teeth and muttered, “Where is the dignity of the Son of Heaven?” and “This time, I absolutely will not let him get away with it.”
At night, though, he would sneak back to the bedside with his tail between his legs, carefully draw Shen Yanshu into his arms, and rub his rounded belly and swollen calves in circles with his palm.
Shen Yanshu kept his eyes closed and said nothing. Pretending to be half-asleep, he hooked an arm around Qi Heng’s neck and burrowed into his embrace. Qi Heng watched his eyelashes tremble faintly as he pretended to sleep, and the corners of his lips lifted.
Several years later, Great Liang welcomed a little Crown Prince as lovely as a carved doll.
The Grand Tutor was teaching in the classroom. When he reached the phrase “forcing someone to do something against their will,” he asked, “Your Highness, do you know what this phrase means?”
The little Crown Prince sat behind his desk, his short legs unable to reach the floor, swinging back and forth. With great seriousness, he said, “Of course I do. ‘The strong one’ refers to my Imperial Father.”
The Grand Tutor’s hand shook, and he nearly dropped the book. He asked in a trembling voice, “W-Why does it refer to His Majesty?”
The little Crown Prince answered with righteous confidence, “My Imperial Father is the ruler of all under Heaven and commands the four seas. Naturally, he is the strongest person in the world.”
The Grand Tutor: “...”
“As for ‘locking up a man’... ‘man’ means Father. Last time, I peeked through the crack in the door and saw it. Father kicked Imperial Father, and Imperial Father took out the golden lock he’d had made a few days earlier, then locked Father’s wrist to the headboard...”
He raised his head, looking as if he expected praise. “Grand Tutor, did I explain it right?”
