It's Been Years Since I Was a Big Shot

A Qi couldn’t remember much anymore. All she knew was that she owned a restaurant and had a capable, admired young husband who kept their home in order.

News came from the capital that Song Huaishu, the overbearing and wicked chief eunuch of the Eastern Depot, had died. A Qi joined her neighbors in clapping and cheering, while her own husband could only smile helplessly.

As they cuddled late at night, A Qi held her husband and asked curiously, “What kind of person was that Song Huaishu, anyway?”

Lazily nestled in her arms, her husband replied softly, “Chief Eunuch Song does whatever she wants, thinks only of herself, and takes revenge over the slightest offense. Even His Majesty the Emperor would be so frightened by one cold glance from her that his legs would give out.”

A Qi said wistfully, “She sounds like exactly the kind of person I want to be.”

Her husband gave her an indescribable look and shook his head. “My wife, you wouldn’t want that.”

Later, when A Qi recovered her memories, she finally understood what that look had meant.

...The chief eunuch was me all along.

Later still, the Emperor went on an incognito tour and, upon seeing A Qi and the young husband behind her, turned pale. He looked just like a puppy that had been cruelly abandoned. “Chief Eunuch Song, what am I to you?”

A Qi: “...Your Majesty, I retired from being a big shot years ago.”
