Hua Qianshu had just become the new God of Matchmaking, but the Matchmaking Pavilion was old and badly in need of repairs. With a tremendous crash, it collapsed.
The Heavenly Emperor waved a hand and sent her down to the mortal realm to set up shop there.
So she bought a dilapidated Taoist temple halfway up a mountain, where she met Fan An, a young man digging a hole to bury himself in.
The temple needed a junior disciple to do odd jobs, so she cured his illness on a whim and took him in.
Her little disciple was almost impossibly well-behaved. He cooked, washed dishes, kept the temple in order, and carved all sorts of things, doing everything neatly and efficiently. He obeyed her without question and never defied her. Even his talent for cultivation was astonishing.
She thought they would just keep living like this.
But when she returned to Heaven to report on her work, the Heavenly Emperor told her that the disciple she had taken in was the War God Ye Fang, who had descended to the mortal realm to undergo a tribulation.
The Heavenly Emperor ordered her to send him back, which meant she would have to kill him with her own hands.
Fan An willingly died in her arms, even smiling as he comforted her:
"I'm happy to die in Master's arms. Even if you deceived me, I'd still accept it gladly. Don't cry..."
After he returned to his divine position, Hua Qianshu hid from him, too afraid to meet his eyes.
But Fan An came looking for her himself and cornered her. "Master, are you planning to deny that I'm your disciple now?"
Hua Qianshu tried to look calm. "How can we take things from the mortal realm seriously?"
Fan An was so agitated that his eyes reddened. He moved closer. "If you insist on treating me this way, I wouldn't mind switching roles with you..."
1. A laid-back, do-nothing God of Matchmaking VS a devoted, innocent young disciple.
2. The story isn't emotionally or physically angsty.
3. All the setting details serve the plot. Don't overanalyze or read too much into them.
Theme: There is no single right answer in life
