Chi Yunting was orphaned at a young age and raised by a neighbor. He thought he would be able to live a peaceful life as an adult.
But one day, an unexpected visitor suddenly kidnapped him by force. When he woke up, he was lying on a small bed in a room that smelled of incense.
Where was he? Was this some kind of scam operation?
The little monster beside the bed burst into tears. “You've been reincarnated as our chief!”
Chi Yunting couldn't make heads or tails of it. “Who believes in reincarnation in this materialist age? Stop messing around and let me go home!”
Later, he discovered he really wasn't in the human world and fell silent.
He hoped it was all a dream.
But the dream wasn't real, and being unable to leave was.
Every time he went near the boundary marker between the human and monster worlds, a group of little monsters would coax and beg him, even threaten to cry themselves to death, until they brought him back.
“You can't leave again! The second-in-command has been waiting thousands of years for you! You have to meet!”
Chi Yunting: ...
The second-in-command? Who was that?
-
He found the steward and asked, “Are your second-in-command and the chief enemies?”
“Enemies? You've got it all wrong.” The steward remained unruffled.
So, they were comrades, even brothers. How could they possibly hold a grudge against each other...
“...They're lovers.”
Enemies turned lovers. That didn't sound much better.
-
Later, after an escape attempt failed, he ran straight into the person in question, who had just returned.
The second-in-command was tall and imposing. He blocked the alley and gave Chi Yunting two choices.
Walk back, or be carried back.
To save face, Chi Yunting abandoned his escape plan and followed him back to the stronghold.
But after catching him, the second-in-command didn't show himself again. Instead, the steward came to see him.
The steward gave him a solemn warning. “The second-in-command lost you a long time ago. He's on the verge of qi deviation now. Please, you have to save him!”
Chi Yunting: “I've told you, I'm not the reincarnation of his beloved. Find someone else.”
The steward pleaded earnestly. “That's all right. The second-in-command used to behead every fake, but he doesn't reject your presence now. That proves you bear an uncanny resemblance to the chief!”
In short, he was going to have to be a stand-in and a cure for heartbreak.
What kind of reincarnation-and-redemption story was this supposed to be?!
