[Republican-era heiress X rugged hired hand]
The young lady of the Yi family rarely ever left her home, spending all day tending to her garden. Then revolution broke out beyond their gates, and just as she was starting to poke her head outside, a hired hand arrived at the family estate.
Taking pity on him for having nowhere to go, she called him into the garden, “Yuzhou, Yuzhou,” and had him plant flowers, pull weeds, and do other odd jobs. She used the opportunity to bring him snacks to fill his stomach. Before long, he grew bold enough to say that the snacks she gave him weren't filling.
Yi Zhen then struck a deal with him: if he snuck her out to see the world, she'd make sure he got to eat meat.
Later, they cast off convention at night, and each time they went further than before. Then one day, a matchmaker crossed the threshold of the Yi family home to propose a match for the young lady.
Yi Zhen wanted to run away then, but Gu Yuzhou told her to meet her betrothed first.
That very night after their meeting, Yi Zhen had a dream.
In the dream, she married this husband she didn't know. Before long, she caught him having an affair with a married woman. Humiliated, she fled back to her parents' home, but everyone urged her to return. Only Yuzhou treated her just as he always had. Just as she was thinking of getting a divorce, she discovered she was pregnant with the faithless man's child and had no choice but to be sent back to her husband's family. Her attempt to flee also earned her a beating from her husband...
Yi Zhen woke from the dream in tears. She threw on her outer robe and ran to knock on Yuzhou's door in the middle of the night. She knocked frantically. When he opened the door, he wasn't even wearing a shirt. Yi Zhen crashed into his rock-hard chest and, trembling, told him how terrifying married life would be.
Yuzhou carried her into his room and comforted her on the bed: “It was all just a dream. Before you marry him, young lady, I'll kill him.”
Later, Yi Zhen realized that Gu Yuzhou's actions were far beyond what any hired hand could manage!
