Rong Bao'an was a thoroughly bad person. After passing the provincial examination, he grew even more displeased with Shen Tingyu, the erudite and exceptionally handsome servant in his household, and drove him away.
Not long afterward, his mother was swindled and the family lost everything. Rong Bao'an had no choice but to travel alone to the capital to take the metropolitan examination. After a nasty rich man picked on him, Rong Bao'an broke down sobbing. He missed the servant who had always spoiled him more than anything.
He cried until his eyes were nearly swollen shut. At last, someone lifted him from the ground. Rong Bao'an wiped away his tears and realized that the person holding him was Shen Tingyu, the man he had envied and missed more than anyone.
He was so aggrieved that he raised his hand and slapped him.
A eunuch shouted, "How dare you lay a hand on His Highness the Crown Prince! Ten heads wouldn't be enough to pay for this!"
He understood at once. His legs went weak, and he thought, I'm completely done for.

Shen Tingyu took Rong Bao'an home and carefully looked after him. He had meant to raise him to be a well-mannered, learned gentleman, but somehow ended up making him even worse than before.
