In 2010, in order to complete her graduation thesis, folklorist Qiu Yingying returned to her hometown of "Greywater Town" to investigate the local legendary custom of "Yinxi" - an ancient ritual of holding ghost marriages for the deceased. The old man in the town kept it secret and only warned her: "No living person should ask about ghosts, and don't look back once the red sedan chair is lifted."
While collecting information, Qiu Yingying reunited with her childhood friend Zhang Ruixie. Now he is a policeman at the town police station. He is rational and pragmatic and scorns superstitious legends. However, due to the recent cases of mysterious disappearances intertwined with rumors of "Yinxi", he is forced to jointly investigate with Qiu Yingying.
During the investigation, the two found that all the clues pointed to an abandoned ancient house in the late Qing Dynasty, "Xizhai".
