A Fox-Raising Diary at Lanruo Temple

Yu Linglong is reborn as an unnamed, scruffy little fox spirit in A Chinese Ghost Story.

Magic? Practically zero. Shapeshifting? It works when it feels like it. The only skill she can claim is sneaking roast chicken from the offering table at Lanruo Temple.

Then the young Taoist Yan Chixia grabs her by the scruff of her neck.

"Where did this little fox come from?"

"...I'm a good fox! I'm a good fox!"

After that, she refuses to leave. Yan Chixia goes out early and comes home late, hunting demons. She mends his Taoist robes by day and secretly brews liquor at night, occasionally picking up his discarded talismans and tracing them for fun.

He says anything touched by demons is unclean, then goes demon-slaying the next day in the Taoist robe she sewed for him.

He says drinking is depraved, then secretly drinks more than half a jug under the moonlight.

He says Lanruo Temple isn't a place for demons, but the next day a bag of candied chestnuts appears on the offering table.

On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, a thousand-year-old tree demon bursts from the ground.

The little fox uses up her meager magic to stand in front of him, then turns and shouts at the demon vines filling the sky:

"Don't touch him! He's my man!"

The young Taoist's sword clatters to the ground, the tips of his ears turning bright red.

"...W-who's your man?!"
